The Japanese kanjis signified tranquility, serenity, and peacefulness. All of these characteristics reflect the culture and spirit of traditional Japanese arts. As a legacy from Chinese painting, gold or silver foil became popular in Japanese visual arts during the Heian Period (794–1185 CEE).
Takashi Murakami's Korin and Kansei series use golden and silver backgrounds, many of which are textured with skulls, over which he presents brilliant and vibrant flora.
