Miyabi is an ancient Japanese phrase for expressing an aesthetic ideal. Miyabi was used to describe to courtly elegance, the ideal picture of aristocratic culture, which emphasized the refining of manners, diction, and feelings without any roughness or crudity in order to reach the ultimate grace. The phrase Miyabi was a trademark of the Heian era, and it was widely employed in art and literature to denote a sense of aesthetic sensibility.
Traditional Edo art painting meets modern Pop art with iconic features like skulls and cheerful flowers set against golden backdrops. Takashi Murakami has built a name for himself by combining heritage and modernity. The Korin and Kansei series are detailed works in which the high gloss varnishing is utilized only on the flowers and leaves, giving the impression of volume and depth.
